Alexandria, MN – April 14, 2010 - Alexandria Extrusion Company (AEC) recently completed a major energy efficient lighting project in its Alexandria MN manufacturing facility.
AEC worked with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Save Energy Now program to complete this project. The goal of the Save Energy Now program is to reduce industrial energy intensity by 25% in 10 years. “We truly appreciate the cooperation at AEC and support in making Save Energy Now a huge success and accelerating progress toward national energy and environmental goals,” stated Douglas Kaempf, Program Manager for the Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program. “Conversion to the energy efficient lighting was quick and relatively easy,” stated Brad Hoven, AEC’s Director of Operations. “We were able to maintain the brightness in our factory that we had with our previous lighting system and the payback is relatively short, with long-term energy savings.” The conversion to energy efficient lighting resulted in a substantial rebate from Alexandria Light & Power as part of its Bright Energy Solutions cash-incentive program. The estimated energy savings are over 1.3 million kWhs and 154 kW of demand for an estimated savings of over $70,000 per year.
Lighting has always been a unique aspect of AEC’s production areas.. Known as one of the brightest facilities in the industry, making changes to this was a concern. The importance of detail in the aluminum extrusion industry drives the need for great lighting. After evaluating the brightness levels the new lights would provide, the decision to move ahead with the changes was apparent. Following the installation of the new lights, every area throughout the plant was evaluated for efficiencies. The extrusion presses, the precision machining areas, along with other areas including the shipping and handling areas where its customers’ precision custom extrusions are packaged for delivery were found to have extremely adequate lighting.
AEC’s commitment to doing what’s right doesn’t end there. AEC received a certificate of appreciation recognizing its exemplary participation in an Energy Savings Assessment from the University of Alabama Industrial Assessment Center. During this assessment and others AEC has participated in, improvement suggestions usually are minor mostly because the correct processes, equipment, and programs are already in place. AEC takes a forward approach to do what’s right, for the environment, its customers, and its employees.
